Byrd began a long association with the University of Maryland as an undergraduate in 1905, and eventually rose to the position of univ WebHe was an assistant coach at Georgia Pre Flight and then North Carolina Pre Flight. He was set to be the head coach for the 1945 season but VJ day ended the need and so Bryant was out of work. Bryant's friend was the owner of the Washington Redskins and put Bryant with Curley Byrd who was the president of the University of Maryland.
